Walkability is a measure of how friendly a community is to walking, biking and public transit.  Municipalities with higher “walk scores”  experience significant health, environmental, and economic benefits. Maine has experienced both an increase in the number of people interested in living in downtowns (aka walkable communities) and an increase in pedestrian and bicycle fatalities in the last two years.  A number of stakeholders in Bangor are already involved in creating a more walkable community and committed to further progress. For this reason, Bangor would be an ideal place to hold an event around walkability.

With that in mind, GrowSmart Maine, in partnership with local stakeholders, is organizing a Walkability Forum in downtown Bangor on September 19, 2017.  The goal is to showcase existing models for walkability, share experiences, connect attendees with resources, and stimulate further efforts toward making Maine downtowns healthier, greener, and more economically viable.

Stormwater is the greatest threat to Maine’s rivers, streams, lakes, and bays. Many communities in Maine and around New England have found that collaborating with public and private entities has helped them make strides in their efforts to protect and restore water resources. This conference showcases effective planning, design, maintenance, and funding approaches to address stormwater runoff quantity and quality and habitat challenges. The 2017 conference will have a focus on collaboration and partnerships that help municipalities and other groups achieve their clean water goals.
