Maine Climate Change Built Environment Committee

Greetings,

Many of you may be aware that the Legislature tasked DEP to report to them,
by next February, about the steps that the State of Maine should undertake
to prepare for climate change. DEP has established a Working Group and
several sub groups. MAP has been invited to participate on the Build
Environment committee. Neither the Working Group nor the sub committees are
tasked with debating whether our climate is warming, cooling, etc. but base
all discussion on the assumption that the climate is changing. There have
been many interesting conversations at both the Working Group and
subcommittee level; some of it quite funny! The Working Group and
subcommittees' membership is wide and varied. Of course, the legislature did
not provide any funding for this undertaking so everything is being done on
a shoestring or by donation.

The Built Environment Committee is supported by several summer interns one
of who is Christopher Keeley (son of David Keeley-what a complicated web we
planners weave!). Working under Liz Hertz, Chris is developing tools to
provide municipalities that will assist the communities in incorporating
climate change into the comprehensive planning process. Some communities
have all ready started work in this area and may find the attached document
too simplistic. Chris would really appreciate feedback from the planning
community as to the draft document.

So that I do not become a middleman in this process and thereby slow down
communication, please direct your comments, suggestions, etc. directly to
Chris. His email is Christopher.H.Keeley@maine.gov.

Thank you in advance for your input.
